How Soon Before Convenience Retail Become Inconvenient to the Shopper?

So as the big four supermarkets are battling their way out of the mess they found themselves in, we at Clear have been thinking about where much of their ‘recovery’ has come from and whether they are in danger of becoming complacent in the future…

As the convenience sector has grown massively for the likes of Tesco and Sainsbury’s we were wondering if the reliance on just being a mini-me of the larger supermarket is going to be the right approach for the future.  Clearly Morrisons did not see it working for them.

In the current climate are the customers using these stores purely to fill an immediate need to pick up the essentials or are they fulfilling their food needs for that night on their way home from work?

We don’t know the answer but wonder if the customer will become bored with the lack of choice on offer and is there a danger that complacency will set in.

We wonder whether these stores should become bastions of the fresh, great product that inspires and fulfils the need of what do I want for tea tonight?  The feeling of being uninspired by the the shopping trip, will leave the customer being uninspired about what they are buying and what they will be eating.  Capture the freshness and theatre of a Wholefoods store, sprinkle with the provenance of a farm shop and combine with the convenience of a few essentials then perhaps somewhere in that mix there is the answer of where the convenience sector should be heading.

Let us know what you think, perhaps we are way off the mark, but in reality its all about understanding what we the customers want from our ‘local’ shop…

We at Clear are retail pragmatists who understand the customer and what they need, take a look at who we are and who we have worked with…
